Aston Villa sign Micah Richards

The 26-year-old, who made just 12 appearances in all competitions on loan at Fiorentina last season and was not in Manuel Pellegrini's plans, will join on a free transfer
Aston Villa have confirmed they have signed Micah Richards on a four-year deal, with the defender set to join on a free transfer on July 1 when his Manchester City contract expires.

Richards spent last season on loan at Fiorentina in search of regular first-team football but made just 12 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A side, and was not in Manuel Pellegrini's long-term plans.

The 26-year-old, who has 13 England caps but has not been selected by Roy Hodgson, can play centre-back or right-back.

"I'm really pleased to get Micah on board and I'm sure he will prove to be an excellent signing for the football club," boss Tim Sherwood told Aston Villa's official website.

Richards becomes Villa's second signing of the summer after former City winger Scott Sinclair confirmed he would be joining the Midlands club on a permanent basis after a successful loan spell last season.
